220km / 5 days

Ultra X Tanzania is a multi-stage ultra marathon that takes place over five days in the stunning scenic and seldom travelled backcountry of northern Tanzania around Mount Kilimanjaro. The route showcases the best of Tanzania and the best of Africa.

How it all started

Eight years ago was our first ultra race in Nepal, a wild mix of jaw-dropping scenery, dodgy decisions at high altitudes (definitely not beer related), and a solemn pact never to attempt anything so utterly insane (painful) again. Spoiler: we lied.

Since then, we've managed to stumble our way from London to Paris, meandered through the lochs of Scotland, and tackled a few random escapades from Norfolk to Somerset.

Fast forward to today: two friends, a bit more gray hair or just less hair, and Alex's brilliant (questionable) idea to celebrate and hijack Elliott’s 50th by running 220km across the Tanzanian wilderness. What could possibly go wrong?

There’s nothing better that says "milestone birthday" like pushing your body into discomfort while questioning your life choices somewhere around kilometer 187.

In true style, we’re tackling this adventure as we always do: with a lot of grit, beers if we can find any, and the comforting knowledge that if one of us gets eaten by a lion, the other will get a great story to tell.
